District 9 EC Golf Fundraiser
District 9 EC Golf Fundraiser
This years edition of the Iowa Lions Foundation had a great addition--

The Virdi Eye Clinic agreed to be our title sponsor and helped make this year's tournament a financial record - over $13,000 - as well as a record for participation with 136 golfers, the most in the 8 years of the tournament.

Virdi's committment to sight is a perfect partner with Lions who have been associated with sight projects since Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become "Knights for the Blind" in 1924.

The tournament involves several Lion Clubs from all District 9 EC. Clubs represented on the committee are Delmar, DeWitt, Maquoketa, Andover, Low Moor, Clinton, Eldridge, Walcott, Davenport Breakfast, Davenport Host and Stanwood.

With Virdi's committment to the Lions of Iowa and our tournament in the coming years, we will grow and expand the impact we as Lions have on our communities.

Following the golf, we had a presentation of awards and prizes, along with an excellent Steak dinner prepared by the Low Moor Lions club.

KIDSIGHT TESTING
KIDSIGHT TESTING
The Davenport Host Lions Club provides free vision screenings to pre-school aged children. This is through the KidSight program supported state wide through the Iowa Lions Clubs. Vision screenings enhance the early detection and treatment of vision problem in developing children which could otherwise affect a person throughout life.

Amblyopia is the most common vision problem in pre-school children. When undetected or left untreated, Amblyopia can result in permanent vision loss that may adversly effect a person throughout life. As many as 9,000 Iowa children under age 4 suffer poor vision. Conditions that can lead to Amblyopuia are not always easy to recognize. Unfortunately, half of all children with Ambyopia are diagnosed after the age of five, when therapy may no longer be effictive.

The following thank you letter was received from a parent that had their child tested in the KidSight screening program:

"We just wanted to thank you so much for your wonderful screening program! Our 5 year old whom we always thought would inherit our poor eyesight, turned out fine for now. Our 3 year old has always been a little clumsy, but we chalked that up to being a distracted todler. He had a screening done about 2 months ago that revealed a potential problem. A follow up found he indeed was significantly farsighted in his left eye. Thankfully it was caught early and is easily treatable before it became a "lazy eye". He is very cute in his glasses now and seems to be enjoying some improved depth perception. Thank you again for all your hard work."

The photographs are mailed to the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences for evaluation by specialists.

The KidSight office mails the results to parents. If a possible vision problem is detected, am letter of referral and a local list of ophthalmologists and optometrists are included. Follow-up on any child being referred is also a part of the package of services.
