A Message from Iowa Lions Foundation President GERALD INMAN
Your help is needed if the Iowa Lions Foundation is to meet its budget for 2007-2008. I encourage all the clubs in Iowa to help fund the entities supported by the Foundation by making a donation. I also encourage individual Lions to make personal donations to the Foundation. Everyone making a personal donation of $20 or more will receive the black and gold 2007-2008 "I Gave" pin. Club and personal donations can be sent to your district trustee or the state office.
To assist you in understanding the 2007-2008 Iowa Lions Foundation budget, I have attached the budget with an explanation of each item below.
Yours in Lionism, Pres. Jerry Inman, Iowa Lions Foundation
2007-2008 IOWA LIONS FOUNDATION BUDGET
OUTFLOWS: $283,500
Iowa KidSight: $120,000
During the 7th year of this program (May, 2006 through April, 2007) 23,142 children were screened with 778 of these children referred for vision problems. This year, the Foundation will fund 42% of the total Iowa KidSight project with the balance of the budget coming from other sources.
Iowa Lions Eye Bank: $90,000
Last year (July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007) eyes were received from 581 donors. Of the eyes harvested, 774 were used for transplants and 446 were used for research. The Foundation donation makes up only 7% of the Eye Bank’s total budget. Iowa Lions Hearing Aid Bank: $7,000
Last year, 258 requests for hearing aids were filled and 2,576 hearing aids were collected for recycling.
Leader Dog/Puppy Program: $3,000
At this time, 27 puppies are being raised and obedience trained by the inmates at the North Central Correctional Facilities at Rockwell City. The cost to raise a puppy (food, veterinarian services and other expenses) is about $500. Individual Lions Clubs and other organizations fund the project also. At about the age of 1 year, these puppies will be transferred to the Leader Dogs for the Blind at Rochester, MI to be trained to become leader dogs.
Education for Blind Children: $6,000
The goal of the Foundation is to help these students by providing each student that applies a grant towards the purchase of equipment they need for their education.
Iowa School for the Deaf: $2,000
The funds donated to the Iowa School for the Deaf are used to pay the expense of using the ICN for communication between the school and deaf students and their parents throughout the state of Iowa.
University of Iowa Cochlear Implant Center: $10,000
This donation will be used to purchase equipment used to test patients prior to implants and after receiving their implants.
Weigel Williamson Center for Rehabilitation: $1,500
The Foundation will be helping to equip this center being built on the University of Nebraska campus at Omaha. Fifteen percent of their patients come from western Iowa.
Administrative, Promotional and Warren Coleman Award Expense: $44,000
For 2007-2008, the Iowa Lions Foundation budgeted $16,000 for administrative expenses, $2,000 for promotional expenses and $26,000 for Warren Coleman Honorary Awards. The cost of the plaque and pin for the Warren Coleman Honorary Award is about $100 and about 200 of the awards will be presented this year. A club donation of $1,000 gives a club the privilege of presenting one of its deserving members a Warren Coleman Honorary Award.
INCOME: $283,500
The 2007-2008 budget for the Iowa Lions Foundation of $283,500 is very comparable to the amount actually raised by the Foundation in 2006-2007 which was $280,231.
Club Donations: $210,000
The goal for club donations was set at $30,000 per district or $210,000. This amount is about $20.00 per member.
Personal Donations: $10,000
The Iowa Lions Foundation is presenting the black and gold 2007-2008 “I Gave” pin to everyone who personally makes a donation of $20 or more.
Iowa Lions Foundation Endowment Fund: $40,000
As of June 30, 2007, the Iowa Lions Foundation Endowment Fund had a value $1,049,473. This year $40,000 will be transferred from the Endowment Fund to the Foundation account. The growth of the Endowment Fund is very important and can be accomplished by you. Remember the Endowment fund as part of your financial planning.
Golf Income: $10,000
Last summer two golf tournaments were held with the proceeds being donated to the Foundation. The Ankeny event had an income of $4,400 and the Quad Cities event had an income of $9,000. Both tournaments will be held again in the summer of 2008. Support these events by playing, being a sponsor or serving on the golf committee.
Round Up Program: $2,500
Lions clubs are asked to go to a store such as Wal-Mart, Hy-Vee, etc. and ask the store to partner in this project. Customers are asked to round the price of their purchases up to the next dollar. The change will be donated to the Foundation through the club. Of course, we will also accept donations made to the Lions by the customers. For more details, please visit with me.
Other: $11,000
The source of this income is memorials, gifts, an annuity left to the Foundation several years ago, the Partners In Service Mid-Winter Basket Project, donations from the pin traders and other miscellaneous inflows.
